چکیده

In this validation work two turbulence models (k-ε and SST model) and two grids (a finer hybrid grid and a tetrahedral coarser grid) are considered in order to model helium release and dispersion. Simulation results are compared against an experiment of jet release phenomena in the Battelle Model Containment facility (BMC), a multi-compartment facility with a total volume of about 560 m. In the selected test, HYJET Jx7, helium was released into the containment at a speed of 42 m/s over a time of 200 s. Although the k-ε model is the most commonly used turbulence model in most CFD applications, it does not provide the most accurate predictions for this application. Alternatively the SST turbulence model has been employed giving more accurate results. This investigation provides a confirmation that the validation of commercial CFD codes is always required in order to select the more suitable physical models and computational grids for each specific application.

CFD-Calculation of Fluid Flow in a

An accurate description of the fluid flow and heat transfer within a Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR), for the safety analysis and reactor performance is always desirable. In this paper a mathematical model of the fundamental physical phenomena which are associated to a typical PWR is presented. The mathematical model governs the fluid dynamics in the reactor. Using commercial software CFX, a co...

Prediction of Light Gas Distribution in Containment Experimental Facilities Using Cfx4 Code: Jozef Stefan Institute Experience

Two and three-dimensional simulations of experiments on atmosphere mixing and stratification in a nuclear power plant containment were performed with the code CFX4.4, with the inclusion of simple models for steam condensation. The purpose was to assess the applicability of the approach to simulate the behaviour of light gases in containments at accident conditions. The comparisons of experiment...

Cfd Code Validation and Benchmarking against Bfbt Boiling Flow Experiment

The paper presents CFD code validation and benchmarking against the NUPEC BFBT (BWR FullSize Fine-Mesh Bundle Tests) data, performed within the OECD/NRC BFBT void distribution benchmark and as part of the NURESIM (European Platform for Nuclear Reactor Simulations) Integrated Project. Sub-cooled flow boiling occurs in many industrial applications and is characterized by large heat transfer coeff...

Assessment of Cfd Codes Used in Nuclear Reactor Safety Simulations

The spectacular growth in computer hardware over the last quarter century and the accompanying advances in software development have resulted in the availability of reliable numerical tools for addressing safety issues in Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs). The first step forward was undertaken in the 1970s with the development of system codes using the two-fluid model approach [1], such as RELAP-5 [2...

Cfd Simulation of Fortum Pts Experiment

Detailed simulation of the thermal stresses of the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) wall in case of pressurized thermal shock (PTS) requires the simulation of the thermal mixing of cold high-pressure safety injection (HPI) water injected to the cold leg and flowing further to the downcomer. The simulation of the complex mixing phenomena including e.g. stratification in the cold leg and buoyancy dr...
